AMT Joins in Urging Congress to Enact SALSA this Year

In a joint letter to Congressional leaders, AMT and 25 other leading healthcare organizations exhorted Senate and House leadership to enact SALSA, a bipartisan and bicameral bill to update Medicare’s payment system for clinical diagnostic lab services, to ensure that seniors and patients have timely access to essential diagnostic tests.

Today (Sept. 8), AMT joined a host of clinical laboratory, hospital, and other healthcare provider organizations in urging Congress to enact the Saving Access to Laboratory Services Act (SALSA) this year.

In a joint letter to Congressional leaders, AMT and 25 other leading healthcare organizations exhorted Senate and House leadership to enact SALSA (H.R. 8188/S.4449), a bipartisan and bicameral bill to update Medicare’s payment system for clinical diagnostic lab services, to ensure that seniors and patients have timely access to essential diagnostic tests.

SALSA is badly needed to repair the damage to the nation’s clinical laboratory infrastructure caused by the Medicare program’s flawed implementation of the Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014 (PAMA). Unless SALSA is enacted this year, further payment cuts of up to 15% for many commonly ordered lab tests will be imposed beginning Jan. 1, 2023.

Joining AMT as signatories to the SALSA letter were such notable provider organizations as the American Medical Association, American Hospital Association, Medical Group Management Association, along with numerous members of the Clinical Laboratory Coalition.

AMT members and their colleagues in the laboratory community are encouraged to urge your own Senators and Representatives to cosponsor and support SALSA. Visit StopLabCuts.org and click on “Take Action” for an easy way to contact your legislators.
