Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

About Applying

After I submit my application for certification, how do I track my progress?

Log in to your My AMT Portal to verify that all documents have been received and processed.

AMT recommends reviewing your:

  1. Application Acknowledgement Letter – lists any documents still needed.

  2. If transcripts are still needed:
    • and you graduated within the last 4 years: contact your school, and arrange for your school to provide the final, official and signed transcript to AMT by emailing it to documents@americanmedtech.org.
    • and you graduated longer than 4 years ago: email a COPY of your transcript/diploma/certificate to documents@americanmedtech.org.

If employment verification is still needed:
    • Please download the appropriate employment verification form on the AMT Resource Center to provide to your employer(s). Return the completed document(s) to AMT via the instructions provided on the bottom of the form.

  3. Application Summary – shows what was entered in your application along with notes from the Certification Department about documents received or actions completed.

Can I get a refund for my application?

About Testing

How soon can I get approved to take my certification exam?

Once your application has been approved—or you have been authorized to test because you are still in school—you will receive an email within 48 hours asking you to visit your My AMT Portal and download the Pearson VUE Authorization Letter. Clicking that link will open a PDF of your Pearson VUE Authorization Letter.

How do I take my exam?

AMT partners with Pearson VUE to offer secure and convenient testing. If you are not at a school with a Pearson VUE site on campus, please find a testing location by visiting the Pearson VUE website. You will need to create an account with Pearson VUE, which is separate from your AMT portal account. Once there, you can select a time, date and location that is best for you. If you have not received a communication from AMT related to your authorization to test, please visit your My AMT Portal to check the status of your application or contact AMT via chat on the website during business hours.

What identification do I need for the Pearson VUE testing center?

To ensure fairness for all exam takers, two forms of valid identification are needed at the time of testing. Both must include your signature and at least one must bear your photo. Photo identification is limited to driver’s license; state-issued identification card; military identification card; or passport.

Your name shown on both forms of identification must be identical to the name listed on your Pearson VUE Authorization Letter for verification. Applicants turned away because of incorrect identification will be required to pay the retesting fee before being allowed to retest.

Can I take the certification exam from home?

In some cases, yes. AMT currently offers live remote proctoring (LRP) for RMA and RPT applicants only. For important details about testing via LRP, check our Live Remote Proctoring FAQ.

How do I prepare for the test?

We encourage applicants to utilize AMT’s study resources when preparing to take the exam. Each certification has a free Exam Content Outline you can download as well as a list of Reference Materials. Applicants for the RMA, RPT, MT or MLT certification can also purchase a full-length practice exam from the AMT Learning Center.

How much time do I have to take the exam?

The length of the test period varies by certification. Here is the current allotted time for each exam: RMA and CMAS are allowed 2 hours. RDA, RPT, and CMLA are each 2.5 hours. MLT and MDT are 3 hours. MT is 3.5 hours.

Are calculators permitted in the test area?

Calculators are neither permitted nor required when taking your examination.

How quickly do I learn my test result?

Your score is displayed moments after completing your test. A printed report is provided to you before leaving the testing center; you should retain a copy of this document for your records.

When can I retake the exam after an unsuccessful attempt?

Examinations may be retaken 45 days after the failed attempt. Applicants are limited to a lifetime of four examination attempts for any one AMT certification, regardless of the number of times a new application is submitted for that certification. After failing any test, AMT recommends studying all areas indicated on the failing score report before reattempting a test. A retesting fee is required for another attempt.

How do I cancel my scheduled examination?

If you must cancel a scheduled examination, go through the Pearson VUE website (preferred) or call 1-888-846-6941. All examinations must be cancelled no less than 24 hours BEFORE the start of the testing window. For example, if your examination is scheduled for 10 am on Thursday, you must call to cancel your examination BEFORE 10 am ON WEDNESDAY. If your examination is scheduled for 10 am on Monday, you must call BEFORE 10 am ON THE PREVIOUS FRIDAY. If you do not cancel your examination within the guidelines a retesting fee will be required.
