To keep your AMT certification active, you must comply with the Certification Continuation Program (CCP) by completing continuing education and other professional activities that fulfill your CCP requirements
GENERAL COMPLIANCE
Q1: Who needs to comply with CCP?
A: Anyone initially certified on or after January 1, 2006.
Note: If you were certified before this date and allowed your membership to lapse for three years or more, you must complete the reactivation process. Once reactivated, you will be subject to the three-year CCP cycle and required to comply with CCP.
Q2: How often do I need to show compliance?
A: Compliance is required every three years, as indicated on your AMT Membership Card or in the “My Certifications and Membership Status” section of the AMT Portal.
To stay on track and ensure compliance by the end of the 3-year cycle, it is encouraged to earn and record approximately one-third of your required points each year.
Important: Members who fail to meet CCP requirements or do not provide documentation if audited will be decertified.
Q3: Can I retake the certification exam to comply with CCP?
A: No, retaking the exam does not count toward CCP compliance.
DOCUMENTATION & COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS
Q4: What documentation is required?
A: You do not need to submit documentation unless you are randomly audited or reactivating your certification.
- Record and track your continuing education activities annually in your AMT Portal.
- If you haven’t met your required CCP points, you’ll receive multiple email reminders before your cycle ends.
Q5: What types of continuing education or professional activities qualify for CCP?
A: Eligible activities typically align with your certification’s exam content outline. Ask yourself:
- Does this help me perform my healthcare job better?
- Does this advance my knowledge in the healthcare field?
- Does this prepare me for an advanced degree or a new healthcare program?
Examples of acceptable documentation can be found on the CCP Compliance Page or in the CCP Guidance Document (printable).
Q6: How long should I keep my supporting documentation?
A: Keep documentation for at least one full CCP cycle (three years) beyond your compliance period.
Q7: I was decertified due to non-compliance with CCP. How do I regain active certification?
A: You must complete the Reactivation Process (see below for details).
QUALIFYING ACTIVITIES
Q8: Can I claim my employment for CCP points?
A: No, as of January 1, 2021, AMT no longer awards CCP points for employment.
Why the change?
The AMT Board of Directors evaluated this policy over several years, ultimately deciding that employment alone does not measure competency. Industry trends have shifted, leading to the removal of employment as a CCP compliance factor.
Q9: What workplace training can I claim for CCP points?
A: While regular work hours do not count, documented training completed at your workplace does, including:
- HIPAA training
- OSHA training
- CPR certification (must include a hands-on component)
- Other in-service sessions
Most employer-required training qualifies under Professional Education and is accepted for CCP compliance.
Q10: How can I earn CCP points?
A: You can earn points through various continuing education (CE) opportunities, such as:
Additional ways to earn points include:
- Writing an article for a professional publication (publish a CE Article with AMT)
- Presenting a technical topic
- Volunteering for a certification-related committee
Aim to earn and record one-third of your required points each year to stay compliant. Be sure to review the full list of qualifying activities for CCP compliance.
NON-COMPLIANCE & FEES
Q11: What happens if I don’t demonstrate CCP compliance by the end of my 3-year cycle?
A: Your certification will lapse (become decertified).
Q12: Are there additional fees for CCP compliance?
A: No, there are no extra fees beyond the annual renewal fee.
Note: Failure to pay your annual fee will result in a loss of member benefits. If fees remain unpaid by the end of your 3-year cycle, your certification will lapse (become decertified).
Q13: I was decertified. How do I regain active certification?
A: To regain active certification, you must complete the Reactivation Process through one of the following options:
- Demonstrate Compliance with CCP
- Submit the Reactivate by CCP Application through your AMT Portal (valid for six months from the submission date).
- Upon instruction, provide documentation verifying qualifying CCP activities that fulfill the required points (all activities must have been completed within the past three years).
- For detailed information. review AMT’s CCP Compliance Criteria and the CCP Guidance Document.
- Retake and Pass the AMT Exam
- Submit the Reactivate by Exam Application through your AMT Portal (valid for six months from the submission date).
- Follow the same procedures required during your original certification exam.
