Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT)

Are you eligible for RPT certification?

Applicants must meet one of the following routes to be eligible to apply for an RPT certification exam.

Required Documentation

Education

Applicant shall have successfully completed (or be scheduled to complete) an approved academic course (or combined courses) of study in phlebotomy within the past 4 years. 

  • Must include a minimum of 120 didactic clock hours (or as required by state law).

AND shall have successfully completed a minimum of 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures from human sources

Applicants Must Submit the Following:

  • Official final transcript provided by the school, showing graduation from a phlebotomy program
  • Phlebotomy Competency Checklist attesting to the successful completion of the required phlebotomy skills, including at least 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures on human subjects.

Hybrid Education-Training/Work Experience

Applicant shall have completed 40 in-classroom (didactic) hours in addition to 160 hours (the equivalent of 4 weeks of full-time employment) of acceptable guided work experience as a phlebotomy technician within the last 3 years.

  • This includes venipunctures, capillary punctures, specimen processing, communication skills, and clerical duties.

AND shall have successfully completed a minimum of 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures from human sources.

*All acceptable phlebotomy work experience credited towards certification must be earned in an approved healthcare facility that engages in collecting, examining, or transporting materials derived from the human body.

Applicants Must Submit the Following:

  • Official documentation showing completion of an eligible hybrid program, such as a secondary school program, structured workforce development program, or government-approved apprenticeship program.
  • Phlebotomy Competency Checklist attesting to the successful completion of the required phlebotomy skills, including at least 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures on human subjects, and 4 weeks of documented full-time phlebotomy experience within the past 3 years.

Work Experience

Applicant shall have completed a minimum of 1,040 hours of acceptable work experience* as a phlebotomy technician within the past 3 years (the equivalent of 6 months of full-time employment)

  • This includes venipunctures, capillary punctures, specimen processing, communication skills, and clerical duties.

AND shall have successfully completed a minimum of 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures from human sources

* All acceptable phlebotomy work experience credited towards certification must be earned in an approved healthcare facility that engages in collecting, examining, or transporting materials derived from the human body.

Applicants Must Submit the Following:

  • A copy of your high school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Phlebotomy Competency Checklist attesting to the successful completion of required phlebotomy skills, including a minimum of 50 venipunctures, 10 skin punctures on human subjects, and 6 months of documented full-time phlebotomy experience within the past 3 years.

Instructor

Applicant shall be currently instructing in an approved allied health program that encompasses phlebotomy.

AND shall have completed a course of instruction in a healthcare discipline related to, or encompassing, phlebotomy.

AND shall have a minimum of three years of teaching experience that encompasses a range of competencies representative of core phlebotomy knowledge and skills.

AND shall have successfully completed a minimum of 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures from human sources

Applicants Must Submit the Following:

  • A copy of your transcripts showing completion of a course of instruction in a healthcare discipline related to, or encompassing phlebotomy.
  • A copy of the course syllabus describing the course content and program length.
  • Phlebotomy Competency Checklist attesting to the successful completion of required phlebotomy skills, including a minimum of 50 venipunctures, 10 skin punctures on human subjects, and 3 years of documented experience teaching a program covering core phlebotomy knowledge and skill competencies.

Scheduling Your Exam

If you are taking the exam at your school, your instructor will provide information about the exam date and time. If you are taking the exam at a one of the hundreds of Pearson VUE testing center locations across the country, you will schedule your own exam.

To cancel or reschedule

Call Pearson VUE at 1-888-846-6941 24 hours prior to your exam. If you are late or don’t show, you must pay a retesting fee to reschedule.

Take the Exam

Arrive 30 minutes prior to exam time with the required testing items:

  1. Authorization letter
  2. Two forms of valid identification
    • Both must have your first and last name identical to your name on your authorization letter
    • Both must bear your signature
    • One form must be a photo ID, either a driver’s license, state ID card, military ID, or passport

After the Exam

  • Results are available after the exam and are sent to AMT within 48 hours
  • All documentation MUST be complete to receive certification
  • Official certificate will arrive in the mail within 7-14 days
  • You may download your certified member card from My AMT Portal.

Retesting

If you receive a failing score, you will need to retake the entire exam.

  • Retake is permitted no sooner than 45 days from previous attempt
  • A non-refundable fee is required for each additional attempt
  • You are limited to 4 exam attempts for any one certification
  • Consult the AMT study resources to prepare for a retake
