Molecular Diagnostics Technologist (MDT) applicants shall meet one of the following eligibility routes.

Required Documentation

Medical Technologist Certification

Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or equivalent and a baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a recognized regional or national accreditation agency, or an equivalent degree from a foreign institution as certified by a foreign transcript evaluation agency approved by AMT. 

  • A minimum of six months of molecular science experience within the past five years

  • Official final transcript showing graduation from a baccalaureate program
  • Six months of documented, full-time laboratory experience within the last 5 years

Molecular Science Program

Baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a recognized regional or national accreditation agency, or an equivalent degree from a foreign institution as certified by a foreign transcript evaluation agency approved by AMT.

  • Including a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biological science, chemistry, mathematics, and/or medical science courses, and successful completion of a diagnostic molecular science program within the past five years**

If recently graduated:

  • Official final transcript showing graduation from a baccalaureate program

If graduated 5+ years ago:

  • Six months of documented, full-time laboratory experience within the last 5 years

Laboratory Science Education

Baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a recognized regional or national accreditation agency, or an equivalent degree from a foreign institution as certified by a foreign transcript evaluation agency approved by AMT.

  • with a major in biological science or chemistry OR 
  • a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology, chemistry, and/or medical sciences, and a minimum of one year of molecular science experience within the past five years**

  • Official final transcript showing graduation from a baccalaureate program
  • One year of documented, full-time laboratory experience within the last 5 years

Advanced Science Degree

Graduate-level degree in chemistry, biology, immunology, microbiology, allied health, clinical laboratory sciences, or an appropriately related field from an institution accredited by a recognized regional or national accreditation agency, or an equivalent graduate-level degree from a foreign institution as certified by a foreign transcript evaluation agency approved by AMT*.

  • Must have a minimum of six months of molecular science experience within the past five years**.

Molecular Biology (Molecular foundations of the process of replication, transcription and translation of genetic material.)

Genetics/Genomics  (The effect of genetic differences on organisms;  pharmacogenomics, mutations, inherited gene disorders, personalized medicine studies, etc.)

Histocompatibility (DNA-based tissue typing determining the compatibility of the antigens of donor and recipient before tissue transplantation.)

Infectious Disease Testing (Qualitative and quantitative testing of molecular organisms [virus, bacterium, etc.], PCR, sequencing, etc.)

Tumor Markers (ALK gene rearrangements, Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), BCR-ABL fusion gene, BRAF mutation V600E, CA15-3/CA27.29, EGFR mutation analysis, etc.)

Oncology/Hematology (BCR/ABL - t(9;22) by RT-PCR (quantitative), ABL Kinase Domain Mutation Analysis in CML, Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH), breast cancer - profiles, etc.)

Mass Spectrometry (In Gel Trypsin Digestion, Automated Edman Degradation, Electrospray Mass Spectrometry, etc.)

*If academic credit is required for eligibility an official transcript must be submitted.  The official transcript must be from an institution accredited by a recognized regional or national accreditation agency approved by AMT bearing the embossed seal of the academic institution, the date the degree was obtained, and the moniker of the school registrar.

**All experience credited toward eligibility must have been gained in a clinical laboratory, research setting, or industrial setting that performs the chemical, physical, or biological examination of fluids, tissues, and specimens that use molecular diagnostic techniques and methodologies. Where required, experience will be verified. The experience must have been obtained within the past five years in at least one of the following seven clinical laboratory disciplines:

  • Official final transcript showing graduation from a graduate level program in chemistry, biology, immunology, microbiology, allied health, clinical laboratory sciences, or an appropriately related field
  • Six months of documented, full-time laboratory experience within the last 5 years

Once you receive notification from AMT with approval you may proceed.

Schedule the exam

If you are taking the exam at your school, your instructor will provide information about the exam date and time. If you are taking the exam at a one of the hundreds of Pearson VUE testing center locations across the country, you will schedule your own exam.

To cancel or reschedule

Call Pearson VUE at 1-888-846-6941 24 hours prior to your exam. If you are late or don’t show, you must pay a retesting fee to reschedule.

Take the Exam

Arrive 30 minutes prior to exam time with the required testing items:

  1. Authorization letter
  2. Two forms of valid identification
    • Both must have your first and last name identical to your name on your authorization letter
    • Both must bear your signature
    • One form must be a photo ID, either a driver’s license, state ID card, military ID, or passport

After the Exam

  • Results are available after the exam and are sent to AMT within 48 hours
  • All documentation MUST be complete to receive certification
  • Official certificate will arrive in the mail within 7-14 days
  • You may download your certified member card from My AMT Portal.

Retesting

If you receive a failing score, you will need to retake the entire exam.

  • Retake is permitted no sooner than 45 days from previous attempt
  • A non-refundable fee is required for each additional attempt
  • You are limited to 4 exam attempts for any one certification
  • Consult the AMT study resources to prepare for a retake
