Applicant Frequently Asked Questions

AMT’s most frequently asked questions for applicants are answered.

Q1: How long is my application good for?

A: The application is considered active for one (1) year from the date of receipt.

Q2: I submitted my application; how should I track my progress?

A: Throughout the application process, you will receive emails from AMT to inform you of your status and next steps. You can also view the status of your application at any time by visiting your AMT Portal and reviewing the following Digital Documents under the tab My Applications:

  • Incomplete Application Notice – provides a list of all needed documents.
  • Application Summary – provides an overview of the information entered in your application and any notes from the Certification Experience Department regarding any documents received or actions completed.
  • Pearson VUE Authorization Letter – provides you with information on how to schedule your exam. Please note that it takes 1–2 business days to process applications and documents that have been received.

Please note: A course-by-course evaluation report of your transcripts is required if your degree is from a foreign institution. Please review the list of acceptable evaluation services for further details.

Q3: How do I submit my transcripts?

A: If you are a recent graduate*, contact your school to request that your official final and signed transcripts be sent to AMT by emailing them to documents@americanmedtech.org. If you send in your transcripts, the transcripts must be mailed to the office in the original, sealed, and unopened envelope. AMT will not accept opened, emailed, or scanned transcripts submitted by an applicant.

*You’re considered a Recent Graduate if you graduated within the last:

  • Four (4) years and applying for MA, RPT, RDA, PCT, or CMAS.
  • Five (5) years and applying for MLS, MLT, MDT, or CMLA.

If you are not considered a recent graduate, you may email a COPY of your transcript/diploma/certificate to documents@americanmedtech.org

Q4: How do I verify my work experience?

A: Please download the appropriate employment verification form in the AMT Resource Center to provide to your employer(s) for completion and then email it to documents@americanmedtech.org for review.

Applicant Submissions

  • Forms submitted by an applicant must include either the company’s stamp/seal or accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from your current or previous employer.
  • The Letter of Authenticity must be printed on the employer’s company letterhead stating that the employment verification form was completed, signed, and dated by a manager, supervisor, or human resources.

Q5: How do I submit my supporting documents?

A: Supporting documents can be emailed to documents@americanmedtech.org for review. Please allow a processing time of 1-2 business days for documents submitted for Medical and Dental applications and 3-5 business days for Lab applications.

Q6: Can I get an extension?

A: Applications are valid for one year from the date you apply, and extensions are not offered.

Q7: Can I get a refund?

A: The application fee is non-refundable, as explained in the candidate handbook and before you apply.

Q8: How do I change my name?

A: To change your name, complete the Name Change or Add Social Security Form. When submitting the form, you must include a copy of legal supporting documentation showing your current name or SSN card.

  • Examples: driver’s license, marriage certificate (or divorce decree), passport, etc.

Forms submitted without the appropriate documentation will not be processed. Please allow up to 4-5 business days for the change to be processed.

Q9: How do I get my certificate or digital badge?

A: Once your application has been completed and you have passed your exam, you will receive a series of welcome emails, a digital badge, access to your digital card, and access to your digital certificate.

Welcome Emails — Over the course of your first month of membership, you will receive a series of welcome emails detailing what you need to do to maintain your certification, career tips, and education highlights.

Digital Badge — AMT has partnered with Credly, a provider of resume-worthy digital badges, to offer simplified online access, verification, and sharing of your AMT certification. Digital badges symbolize your certification achievement in a way you and your employer can easily use. Once certified, you will receive an email from Credly with instructions and a link to claim and access your digital badge.

  • Be sure to put credly.com on your safe sender list and monitor your inbox, junk, and spam folders for notifications.

You can also access a PDF of your membership card and certificate by logging into the My AMT Portal. Once on your AMT PORTAL and under the tab My Certifications, you will click on either AMT Membership Card for Print or AMT Certificate to Print below the bold headline My Digital Documents.

 

Computerized Testing

All examinations for AMT Certification are available by computerized testing, the preferred method for secure testing, and provide the results immediately after completion.

Q1: How do I prepare for the test?

A: We encourage candidates to utilize AMT’s study resources when preparing for the exam. Each certification has an Exam Content Detail you can download and a list of Reference Materials.

Applicants seeking the RMA, RPT, MT, or MLT certification can also purchase a full-length practice exam from the AMT Learning Center. You will receive a detailed review of your results upon completing the practice exam.

Additionally, AMT offers a Fundamentals for Medical Assistants review course consisting of 5 modules and two full-length practice exams. Modules can also be purchased independently from the AMT Learning Center or as a package depending on your studying needs. After completing each module and practice exam, you will receive a detailed review of your results.

Q2: How frequently are the tests administered?

A: Tests are available nearly every day of the year except Sundays and Holidays. Contact Pearson VUE for the days and hours of operation for individual testing centers.

Q3: Where are the examinations administered?

A: Tests are available at over 200 Pearson VUE locations in the United States, its territories, and Canada, in addition to several overseas locations.

You can find a testing location near you by visiting the Pearson VUE website and clicking the link “Find a test center” on the right-hand side of the page. To schedule your exam, you must either create an account or, if you already have an account with Pearson VUE, sign in using your current login information. Once there, you can select a time, date, and location that is convenient for you.

Q4: Can I test online/remotely?

A: Online testing or Live Remove Proctoring (LRP) is only available for applicants taking the RMA and RPT certification exams.

Before selecting LRP as your preferred examination format, we strongly encourage you to:

Q5: How do I change my current exam format? (RMA & RPT applicants only)

A: If you need to change your test site selection from LRP to taking your exam at a Pearson VUE site or the other way around—from a Pearson VUE site to LRP—log into My AMT Portal. Once logged in, click on the “My Applications” tab. Fill out the “Testing Change Form - Active Applicants ONLY” under the “My Status Section”. Once submitted, please allow AMT 7-10 business days to update your current testing authorization. If you have already scheduled an exam time with Pearson, please be sure to cancel your appointment before submitting the “Testing Change Form.”

Please Note: To avoid a missed testing fee, you must cancel any existing Pearson VUE appointment no later than 24 hours BEFORE the start of your exam. To make a new appointment, you must wait until you receive your new Authorization to Test notification.

Q6: How long does it take to complete the computerized test?

A: The length of the computerized test administration period varies by the certification designation. Applicants may inquire through Pearson VUE at the time of test scheduling about the current timing for the examination for which they have been approved. Examination timing is subject to change without notice. The chart below shows the currently allotted time for each exam:

  • Medical Assistant (RMA) – 2.0 hours
  • Medical Administrative Specialist (CMAS) –2.0 hours
  • Dental Assistant (RDA) – 2.5 hours
  • Phlebotomy Technician (RPT) – 2.5 hours
  • Medical Laboratory Assistant (CMLA)– 2.5 hours
  • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) – 3.0 hours
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)– 3.0 hours
  • Molecular Diagnostics Technologists (MDT) – 3.0 hours

Q7: Are calculators permitted in the test administration area?

A: Calculators are neither permitted nor required when taking your examination.

Q8: What identification is needed for testing and admittance into the Pearson VUE testing center?

A: Two forms of valid identification are required at the time of testing. Both must include your signature, and at least one must bear your photo. Your name shown on both forms of identification must be identical to the name listed on your Pearson VUE Authorization Letter for verification. APPLICANTS TURNED AWAY DUE TO INCORRECT IDENTIFICATION WILL BE REQUIRED TO PAY THE RETESTING FEE BEFORE BEING ALLOWED TO RETEST. Photo identification is limited to a:

  • Driver’s license
  • State-issued identification card
  • Military identification card, or
  • Passport

Q9: When can I contact Pearson VUE and schedule my exam?

A: When your American Medical Technologists (AMT) certification application is complete and the AMT Certification Experience department has received all the required information, you will receive an email directing you to contact Pearson VUE to schedule a date and time to take your examination. Appointments may be scheduled or changed online at https://www.pearsonvue.com/us/en/amt.html.

You can also visit your My AMT Portal to download the Pearson VUE authorization letter. Clicking this link will open a PDF of your Pearson VUE Authorization Letter, providing details on the timeframe your authorization is valid, acceptable forms of identification, and the rescheduling policy.

Please Note: Any changes to your scheduled examination time must be made no later than 24 hours BEFORE the scheduled time of your exam.

Q10: Pearson VUE cannot find my record when I try to schedule my examination. What should I do?

A: AMT currently uses ID numbers comprised of 7 digits, i.e., 1234567. Older records consisted of 5 or 6 digits, so a ‘LEADING’ zero (0) must be added. For example:

  • 12345 would become 0012345
  • 123456 would become 0123456.

Be sure to provide your AMT ID number in a seven-digit format when contacting Pearson VUE to schedule your exam. If Pearson VUE still cannot find your authorization, you must contact AMT to complete further research.

Q11: When are my computerized test results available?

A: Your score is displayed moments after completing your test, and the printed report is provided to you before leaving the testing center. You should retain a copy of this document for your record.

Q12: How do I cancel or reschedule my examination?

A: If you need to cancel a scheduled examination, you can do so through the Pearson VUE website (preferred) or by calling 1-888-846-6941. All testing appointments must be canceled at least 24 hours BEFORE the start of the testing window. For example:

  • If your exam’s scheduled for 10 am on Thursday, you must call to cancel your examination BEFORE 10 am ON WEDNESDAY.
  • If your exam’s scheduled for 10 am on Monday, you must call to cancel your examination BEFORE 10 am ON THE PREVIOUS FRIDAY.

A retesting fee will be required if you do not cancel your examination within these guidelines.

Please Note: Any changes to your scheduled examination time must be made no later than 24 hours BEFORE the scheduled time of your exam.

Q13: I missed my exam; how do I reschedule the test?

A: If you missed your exam or were turned away at the testing center, you can reschedule your exam 24/48 hours after paying the rescheduling fee. However, if your application has or will expire soon, you will need to submit a new application.

Q14: How soon can an applicant retake the exam after an unsuccessful attempt?

A: If unsuccessful in your attempt, you must pay the retesting fee and wait the mandatory 45-day waiting period between each unsuccessful exam attempt before you can reschedule your test. However, if your application has or will expire soon, you will need to submit a new application.

Q15: How do I pay the retesting fee?

A: To pay the retest fee, please log into My AMT Portal. Once on your AMT Portal and under the tab My Applications, you will select “My Exam” and click the certification title showing your status as “Not Paid.” This will open your Exam Summary, where you can click the button “Pay Exam Fee Now” to make your rescheduling payment.

Q16: How many times can I take the exam?

A: Applicants are limited to a lifetime of four (4) examination attempts for any one AMT certification, regardless of the number of times a new application is submitted for that certification. We encourage candidates to utilize AMT’s study resources when preparing to retake the exam and review all areas in which mastery of the material was not achieved (as indicated on the failing score report).
