Are you eligible for MLT certification?

Applicants must meet one of the following routes to be eligible to apply for an MLT certification exam.

AMT is now approved for its Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification examination in the state of CA. All California licensure candidates who choose to take AMT’s MLT exam are notified that the competencies covered on the exam exceed CA state’s lawful scope of practice.

Required Documentation

Education

Applicant shall have graduated with an associate degree in medical laboratory technician (or equivalent) within the past five years from a program or institution accredited by a recognized regional or national accreditation agency.*

  • Acceptable programs must include clinical rotation through the following sections of the laboratory: Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Hematology
  • A minimum of six months of approved clinical laboratory experience within the last five years is required for individuals who either:
    • Graduated more than five years ago OR
    • Graduated from a program that does NOT include an experiential component (experience must include a clinical rotation through the abovementioned sections of the laboratory)

*Program or institution must be accredited by either the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or another regional or national accreditation agency approved by the US Department of Education (DOE), the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or otherwise approved by AMT.

Applicants Must Submit the Following:

  • Copy of your college transcripts showing an associate degree in medical laboratory technology

If graduated 5+ years ago:

  • Six months of documented, relevant, full-time laboratory experience within the last five years in a laboratory that performs the chemical, physical, or biological examination of human body fluids and tissues
    • Work requirement is full-time at 40 hours/week (part-time combination allowed)
    • Covid testing or research experience is not accepted

Alternate Education Route

Applicant shall have completed at least two years (60 semester hours) of courses within the past five years in an institution accredited by a recognized regional or national accreditation agency * or an equivalent degree from a foreign institution as certified by a foreign transcript evaluation agency approved by AMT.

AND shall have completed either:

  • Twenty-four (24) semester hours of medical laboratory technology or clinical laboratory science courses OR
  • Twenty-four (24) semester hours of science courses that include six (6) semester hours of chemistry; six (6) semester hours of biology; and twelve (12) semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.

AND shall have completed a minimum of six months of approved clinical laboratory experience within the past five years

  • The experience must have been obtained within the last five years, rotating through the following sections of the laboratory:
    Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Hematology.

*Program or institution must be accredited by a regional or national accreditation agency approved by the US Department of Education (DOE), the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or otherwise approved by AMT.

Applicants Must Submit the Following:

  • Copy of your college transcripts showing completion of 60 semester hours of courses with at least 24 semester hours of either:
    • Medical laboratory technology or clinical laboratory science courses OR
    • Science courses (6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination)
  • Six months of documented, relevant, full-time laboratory experience within the last five years in a laboratory that performs the chemical, physical, or biological examination of human body fluids and tissues
    • Work requirement is full-time at 40 hours/week (part-time combination allowed)
    • Covid testing or research experience is not accepted

Degrees from Foreign Institutions:

Military

Applicant shall have completed a 50-week US military medical laboratory training program within the past five years provided that the training credits were earned in, or have been accepted for transfer by, an accredited college or university leading to the award of an appropriate degree*.

  • If graduated more than five years ago, a minimum of six months of approved clinical laboratory experience is required.
    • The experience must have been obtained within the last five years, rotating through the following sections of the laboratory: Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, and Hematology.

*Program or institution must be accredited by a regional or national accreditation agency approved by the US Department of Education (DOE), the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or otherwise approved by AMT.

Applicants must submit the following:

  • Copy of your military transcripts showing an associate degree in medical laboratory technology

If graduated 5+ years ago:
