Q1: Why did AMT choose this time to make the change to CCP requirements?

A: The AMT Board of Directors had been studying this issue for several years and was slated to make the announcement before the pandemic hit. With industry trends in various health professions also moving away from employment meeting competency standards and requirements, the Board decided not to delay the implementation.

Q2: What are my options for obtaining CCP points?

A: Even though you will no longer be able to claim actual work hours for CCP compliance, you can still continue to claim documented training and/or courses completed at your place of employment, such as HIPAA, OSHA, CPR training and other in-service sessions. Most training that is required as part of your ongoing employment will be allowed for CCP compliance.

In addition, you can obtain CE through AMT, the CDC or any other organization that provides CE relevant to your certification. Other ways to comply include writing an article for a publication, presenting a technical topic, and/or volunteering for a committee that is related to your certification. You can review a full list of qualifying options here.

Q3: When will this change affect me?

A: If you are currently in your current 3-year CCP cycle, you will still be able to claim CCP points for the years that you worked during that cycle – but only through 12/31/2020. For example:

  • If your current CCP cycle started on 1/1/2018, you can claim all three years of employment (18 total points or 6 points each year for full-time work experience or an amount accepted for part-time work experience) for this cycle.
  • If your CCP cycle started on 1/1/2019, you will be able to claim 2 years of employment for this cycle.
  • If your CCP cycle started on 1/1/2020, you will only be able to claim 1 year of employment.
  • If your CCP cycle begins on 1/1/2021 or later, you will no longer be able to claim any points for work experience.

Q4: Are we still able to use online CE credit after January 2021?

A: Yes, completion of online continuing education to meet the CCP requirement has not been affected by this change.

Q5: Will AMT make accommodations such as lowering the total number of required points or increasing point values for certain activities?

A: No, AMT does not plan to make any special accommodations at this time.

Q6: Isn’t this elimination of the work experience points just a scheme to make money for AMT by requiring members to purchase more AMT’s continuing education products?

A: Not at all. AMT accepts a variety of forms of continuing education from many different providers of CE. There is no requirement to use only AMT educational products.
